Heart Palpitations Prevention

You can prevent heart palpitations by heeding the following recommendations:

Cut down on stress – Too much levels of stress often lead to various kinds of health conditions some of which include certain health problems. Stress can definitely result in heart palpitations. To help control stress, you can do activities that help minimize it. These activities can include relaxation techniques like acupuncture, Tai Chi, meditation or yoga.

Consider carefully the medications you are taking – Using certain types of drugs particularly drugs that are considered stimulants can cause heart palpitations. Some of these drugs include allergy meds, phentermine, nicotine, diet pills, amphetamines, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, and other decongestants. Nicotine, alcohol and caffeine likewise have a stimulating effect on the heart and it is best to avoid or at least limit intake of these substances.

Use medicines prescribed by your doctor to prevent or control anxiety or panic attacks – Anxiety or panic attacks can cause heart palpitations. Have routine checkups with your physician to know if you may be suffering from a medical condition that may cause palpitations – Conditions that can lead to palpitations include low or high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, pre-menopause, heart disease, anemia and thyroid disorders. Always follow your doctor’s order if you have high blood pressure. Do not skip doses If you are prescribed with medicines that control your high cholesterol.

Some other suggestions to prevent palpitations are:

Eating a healthy diet good for your heart – This can entail eating foods rich in omega-3 fats, a low salt diet, low cholesterol diet and eating foods containing about 10%-15% monounsaturated fats (these are fats found in peanut oil, canola oil and olive oil.

Scaling your fat intake to about 30% of your total calories

Monitor your blood pressure everyday – If you have high blood pressure meds prescribed by your doctor, don’t skip doses of these medicines.
